Reading Comprehension Questions

We had a wonderful Conference week! I really enjoyed having the opportunity to talk with each family.

One area that we talked about was reading and how important it was to read with your child every day.  Below is a few questions that you can discuss with your child after your reading

Fiction  questions to ask your child after they read:
-Who was the main/most important character in the story?
-What was the main character trying to do?
-What was the problem and solution?
-What was the setting (where did the story take place)?
-What was your favorite part and why?
-What character traits did the characters have (kind, mean, creative, patient, messy)? How do you know?
-Retell the most important events in your own words.
-What was the author's purpose for writing the book?
(Entertain-Fiction, Inform-Nonfiction or Persuade-Opinion)

Non-fiction questions to ask your child:
Ask before reading: What do you already know about the topic?
What facts were in the book?
What new facts did you learn?
What questions do you have after reading?
What is your favorite fact and why? to ask your child:

We have been learning so many exciting things in first grade so far!

*In reading we have been building stamina to see how long we can read for. We have accomplished 20 minutes :)

*In writing we are working together to write about small moments in our life. We are using pictures and words to tell our wonderful stories!

*In math we have been working a lot on place value and what a ten and a one is. We are still practicing counting to 120 also!

*In science and social studies we have learned so many things already. We have studied weather, seasons, and precipitation. We will be starting our Benjamin Franklin study soon!!

Performing Arts

Mr. Wehr, our Music teacher here at Sedalia Park, would like everyone to know why it is so important that you sign your child's permission slip for the Performing Arts. He writes

Why should you sign the permission slip and donate to the performing arts program?
  • To provide opportunities for Cobb's children K- 8th grades to experience uniquely rewarding performing arts that might otherwise be unavailable to them.
  • To spark curiosity, broaden awareness of the Arts, stimulate minds and emotions, foster creativity and inspire a lifelong interest and love of the arts with far-reaching effect.
To encourage excellence in the arts by providing high-quality professional performances and opportunities for cultural enrichment through the performing arts. Sedalia Park’s 5th grade will see the Atlanta Symphony Dec. 9th and the 2nd grade will see the Ballet Sleeping Beauty. Last year we were able to bring special performances to Sedalia Park for our 3rd grade and 4th grade. We also had our Kindergarten and 1st grade enjoy a special performance at the High Museum in Atlanta.

Please sign and consider donating to the Performing Arts Program. This really does help our students!

Thanks DWEHR
